More Internal Picks: Hannah and Despina for Slovenia and Cyprus
As all eyes were seemingly on the National Finals in Malta and Iceland or one of the Semifinals in Norway, Hungary, and Sweden, two other nations unveiled their representatives for Malmö. In Cyprus, veteran performer Despina Olympiou was selected by broadcaster CyBC, while in Slovenia, American-born Hannah Mancini will pick up the mantle of her adopted country.
Limassol-born Despina has been actively performing since 1992, and is expected to release her seventh album later this year. She is particularly well-known for her long-standing association with fellow-Cypriot Michalis Hatzigiannis, who represented the island nation in Eurovision 1998 with “Genesis“. More recently, Despina recorded “Den s’ afino apo ta matia mou“, a collaboration with Greece’s 2011 representative Stereo Mike. Her song, whose title has yet to be released, will be performed in Greek and unveiled to the public on February 14th. To hold us over until then, here’s her 2005 single “Kapote”:
Going from one end of the Balkan Peninsula to the other, RTV Slovenia has decided to forgo the “Misija Evrovizija” and “EMA” format of recent years in favor of its first purely internal selection. Interestingly, the country has chosen American-born singer Hannah Mancini, recognized locally for her work with the group “Xequtifz” and known to Eurovision fans for her EMA 2011 entry “Ti Si Tisti”, a collaboration with Sylvain and Mike Vale. She has been living and working in Slovenia for the past six years. Just like Despina, Hanna’s song will be unleashed on February 14.
Between the releases of Despina and Hannah’s entries and the German National Final, it looks like it’s going to be a busy Valentine’s Day!
