Preview: Norway’s Melodi Grand Prix, Semi 1

It’s shaping up to be a banner weekend in the Nordic Bloc, with Denmark picking their performer for Baku, Iceland holding their second Semifinal, and Norway kicking off their selection with the first Semifinal of Melodi Grand Prix.  Out of the more than 800 songs submitted to broadcaster NRK, twenty-four lucky songs will be split into three semis, and the top three acts from each event will qualify for the Final on February 11 in Oslo.  The first Semifinal will be held in Brekstad (near Trondheim) this Saturday.

The eight songs competing this week are: Read the rest of this entry

Second Semifinal in Germany

The second heat for Germany’s ” Unser Star für Baku” was held today on the ProSieben network.  Like last week, the dynamic new instant-tally system was used during the show, allowing viewers at home and in the studio to see the standings throughout the proceedings.

After another nail-biting round of voting, qualifying for the next round are: Read the rest of this entry

43 Nations to Compete in Baku

The highly-anticipated list of Eurovision 2012 participants was finally released by the EBU today, and to the pleasant surprise of many, there will be 43 nations competing for ESC glory in Baku, Azerbaijan this May.  An unfortunate withdrawal by Poland was offset by the welcome return of Montenegro, and all other countries have decided to remain in the competition.  The participating broadcasters are: Read the rest of this entry

Preview: Dansk Melodi Grand Prix

On Saturday, January 21, the first of the Nordic National Finals will be held in Aalborg, Denmark, and Eurovision 2012 will have its third official song (after Switzerland’s “Unbreakable” and Albania’s “Suus”).  The Gigantium Arena will play host to the Dansk Melodi Grand Prix, which has been the selection process for Denmark’s song since their ESC debut in 1957.  Denmark has fared well recently at Eurovision, scoring two Top Five places in the past two years.  Will one of these songs continue the trend, or even bring the competition to Copenhagen in 2013? Second Semifinalists for Iceland

After this past weekend’s exciting first Semifinal for Söngvakeppni Sjónvarpsins, Icelandic broadcaster RÚV has released the next group of five songs who will be in the running for the nation’s ticket to Baku this May.  The lucky semifinalists are:

Ellert Jóhannsson – “Ég kem með (I’ll Bring)”
Simbi og Hrútspungarnir- “Hey
Rósa Birgitta Ísfeld- “Stund með þér (A Moment With You)”
Regína Ósk Óskarsdóttir- “Hjartað brennur (My Heart Burns)”
Guðrún Árný Karlsdóttir- “Minningar (Memories)”

Fans might recognize the name (or voice) of Regína Ósk, as she was one half of Iceland’s performers from 2008, Euroband.  (Check out “This is My Life” to refresh your memory.)

Iceland’s Second Semifinal will be held this Saturday, January 14.

RAI Reveals the Candidates for Sanremo

After years of absence, Italy made a splash on the ESC scoreboard in 2011 with Raphael Gualazzi’s surprise runner-up finish.  After such a strong showing, broadcaster RAI has announced that they will continue on in Eurovision, and will pick their 2012 performer in the same manner as last year: through a special jury who will handpick a performer from the ranks of this year’s SanRemo Festival.  As in previous years, the Festival will be split into two separate components: one for established artists and one for newcomers.

Competing in the division for established stars:

  • Pierdavide Carone feat. Lucio Dalla – “Nanì”
  • Irene Fornaciari – “Il mio grande mistero”
  • Emma Marrone –  “Non è l’inferno”
  • Matia Bazar – “Sei tu”
  • Noemi – “Sono solo parole”
  • Francesco Renga – “La tua bellezza”
  • Arisa – “La notte”
  • Nina Zilli – “Per sempre”
  • Samuele Bersani – “Un pallone”
  • Dolcenera – “Ci vediamo a casa”
  • Chiara Civello – “Al posto del mondo”
  • Gigi d’Alessio & Loredana Berté – “Respirare”
  • Eugenio Finardi – “E tu lo chiami Dio”
  • Marlene Kuntz – “Canzone per un figlio”

Some of these names might be familiar to Eurofans: Matia Bazar represented Italy in 1979 with “Raggio di Luna“.  Loredana Berté is the sister of the late Mia Martini, who performed twice at Eurovision (1977 and 1992).  And Emma Marrone was the runner-up in last year’s SanRemo Festival, performing with rock group Modà on “Arriverà“.  (Furthermore, dedicated followers of this blog might remember that I put Arisa on my “ESC Wish List” last year.  My fingers are still crossed!)

And the Newcomers:

It appears that Alessandro Casillo would be ineligible for Eurovision participation, as he is only fifteen years old, and won’t turn sixteen until June.  So that means that one of the other twenty-one songs listed above will have their shot at the ESC…who do you think will take it?  Will it be another newcomer, or one of the veterans?  And will they be able to better Raphael Gualazzi’s score, and take a Eurovision victory back to Italy for the first time since Toto Cutugno’s win in 1990?

Iceland Picks its First Two Finalists

Latvia picks their Second Five Qualifiers

The second semifinal of Latvia’s National Final, Eirodziesma, was held today, and only half of the ten songs in the running were going to make it through to the Final on February 18, so the competition was fierce.  After a 50/50 Jury/Televote split, we have the five lucky winners: Read the rest of this entry

Germany starts to pick “Unser Star für Baku”!

Last night, ten hopeful candidates helped kick off Germany’s national selection process for Eurovision 2012.  Much like the process that helped launch Lena Meyer-Landrut into stardom two years ago (has it really been two years already?), “Unser Star für Baku” will put singers through their paces as they sing covers during a number of heats, quarterfinals, and semifinals, before culminating in a Final (where we’ll likely hear the possible songs for the ESC) on February 16th.  Read the rest of this entry
